London has seen more than 140 gun crime incidents over the past year.

There have been a total of 145 firearms offences and eight gun-related murders in the capital since March 2023 - and just over half of criminals end up being prosecuted.

However, the Met Police have said they are continuing to crack down on gun crime in response to incidents.

Their efforts have resulted in the lowest number of gun-related offences in the last 15 years, with 386 illegal firearms seized in London last year.

Firearms incidents have been reduced from 196 in 2022/23 to 145 in 2023/2024, with gun-related murders brought down from 12 to eight over the last three years.

The Met's team of specialist detectives continue to use data, forensics and technology to locate illegal guns and arrest the criminals involved.

Officers have led targeted operations in different London boroughs.

In Harrow, Brent and Barnet this has meant that there has not been a single gun-related murder since 2020, compared to the at least one fatal shooting each year recorded from 2014 to 2020.

Similarly, Lambeth and Southwark witnessed a 44 per cent reduction in gun crimes over the last year.

Met Commander Paul Brogden, who is responsible for specialist crime, said: "Guns destroy lives and communities.

"The recent shootings in parts of London are a sad reminder that there is still work for us to do when it comes to cracking down on illegal firearms.

"My thoughts are with those affected."

He added that the Met will remain "relentless" in their pursuit of criminals that use and supply guns to make London a safer place - and bring justice for victims and their families.

Among the victims is Tyrese Miller, 22, shot dead in Croydon last year, in a case of mistaken identity.

A man has since been convicted for manslaughter, and another two for possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Tyrese's mother, Jackie Taylor, said: "I worry that if this can happen to Tyrese, it can happen to anyone.

"Once you met Tyrese, you never forgot him.

"He was loved.

"He was the centre of our family.

"No mother should have to bury their son like I have."
