A celebration of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets is coming to Woolwich at the end of the month.

Woolwich Armed Forces Day 2024, taking place on June 29, promises a day packed with both military and non-military family events.

Woolwich's Royal Artillery Barracks Field, in Repository Road, will host the event from 10am to 10pm.

There will be a host of displays and performances, including the Kings Troop performing a Ride Past and a show by the 56 Air Cadets Band.

The day is set to open with a parade of more than 400 military personnel, starting from General Gordon Square at 9.30am, and progressing to Barrack Field.

The Band of the Welsh Guards is expected to lead the procession, with veterans joining at Barrack Field for the opening ceremony of Woolwich Armed Forces Day.

Major General Neil Marshall, Greenwich Mayor Jit Ranabhat and Matthew Pennycook, who was MP for Greenwich & Woolwich until Parliament dissolved, will formally open the ceremony.

Event organisers are also planning a parachute drop and are hoping to have one of FTX Logistics’ giant trucks on display.

Non-military events include a classic car procession, a police display, and various music performances throughout the day.

The organisers have said they are currently negotiating for a "big name band" to close the Armed Forces celebration.

Families can also look forward to a funfair, an under-16's football tournament run by Charlton Athletic Football Club, and challenging physical assault courses for all ages run by the Royal Artillery.

Within the Barracks Field there will be a dedicated refreshment village, with stalls selling food and drink.

Small businesses and the University of Greenwich are among the supporters of the event, with Head of Community Engagement for HQ London District Alex Page involved with arranging military hardware for display on the day.

The event celebrates Armed Forces Day, falling on the last Saturday of June each year.

This special day honours the men and women of the Armed Forces community, including currently serving personnel, veterans and cadets.

Armed Forces Day marks the end of a week of celebrations for the community, which includes Reserves Day on June 26.
