A woman living near to where a man was stabbed to death in Deptford said it’s “just the norm these days in London”.
At around 10:35pm last night (Thursday, June 6) police were called to the stabbing in Carteret Way, near the Pepys Estate.
A man who is believed to have been aged in his 20s died at the scene and two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
One local woman, who did not want to be named, said: ”I’m not really surprised, no. There’s always been stabbings in this estate.”
She added: “It’s just the norm these days in London, isn’t it. I wouldn’t want to be the mum of a young man growing up here, I’d be constantly scared.”
Another resident said she got back from work after midnight and saw police at the scene.
“There were so many police cars, so I knew it was serious,” she said.
A man who lived in a block of flats nearby said: “My brother told me there had been a stabbing near but I didn’t realise it was right here. I can’t believe it. So sad.”
Lewisham Mayor Brenda Dacres tweeted: “Deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Deptford. My thoughts are with their family and friends.
“Thank you to the police and ambulance service for their efforts. We must work together to ensure safety in our community.”
