A stalker who strangled his ex-girlfriend and threatened her with a knife has been jailed.
Billy Magee subjected Gemma Brummitt to abusive and controlling behaviour during their relationship, including threatening her with a knife on Christmas Day.
On another occasion the 45-year-old grabbed her by the throat and strangled her.
When their relationship ended he began stalking her, leaving threatening voice messages and turning up unannounced.
Magee, of Congress Road in Abbey Wood, appeared at Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing on Monday (May 20) after he pleaded guilty to stalking and engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour.
The court heard that Magee and Ms Brummitt were in a relationship for four years.
Two particular incidents of abuse inflicted on Ms Brummitt by Magee during their relationship were outlined to the judge.
On Christmas Day 2021 the couple had an argument while friends and family were at their house.
At one point Magee held a small kitchen knife while shouting at Ms Brummitt, before telling one of her friends he would put the knife to her throat if she didn’t shut up.
Then on April 12, 2022, Magee grabbed Ms Brummitt by the throat and strangled her during an argument.
The relationship ended in March last year but Magee repeatedly phoned her and left voice messages.
On August 25 last year the left a message saying he would kill her.
His mum then phoned Ms Brummitt and said: “I don’t know what to do. He’s gone mad. He thinks you cheated. He’s coming to you.”
Later on October 9 the court heard that Magee visited Ms Brummitt’s address and became aggressive.
As well as coercive/controlling behaviour and stalking, Magee admitted possessing a small amount of cocaine and cannabis.
His barrister told the court that heavy drug use had impacted his lifestyle during that period of his life.
Judge Nicholas Heathcote Williams sentenced Magee to two years and three months in prison.
