A road rage driver who battered another man’s car with a hammer after a minor crash has appeared in court.

Billy May, 28, of Camden Close in Northfleet, was driving with friends when he was involved in a minor traffic collision on Homerton Road in Gravesend on November 27, 2022.

Both drivers got out their cars and it became apparent that May was extremely angry, Woolwich Crown Court heard.

The other man, who spoke little English, tried to exchange insurance details but May called him a “f***ing Turk”.

May then took a hammer and smashed the other man’s car before two of his own friends held him back.

May then drove away from the scene.

When he was arrested on Milton Road in Swanscombe five days later police found the hammer and a baseball bat in his car.

May admitted affray and criminal damage relating to the road range incident.

May appeared at Woolwich Crown Court for sentencing on Monday (May 20).

Recorder Joshua Swirsky described May’s language as “despicable” but said “I accept that this behaviour was out of character”.

He sentenced May to one year in custody, suspended for 18 months.

May will be required to pay £120 compensation and complete 15 rehabilitation activity days.
