The Dartford Crossing may be just a normal bridge to you muggles, but did you know it was used as a filming location for one of the biggest movie franchise’s in the world?!
The Dartford Crossing was used in 2010 in the last instalment in the magical series - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
In a thrilling scene, young Hogwarts wizard Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, and Hagrid, played by the late Robbie Coltrane, are chased through the Dartford Crossing tunnel, weaving between traffic on a flying sidecar.
Filming reportedly occurred during overnight maintenance closures, seamlessly avoiding traffic disruptions.
The Dartford Crossing, linking Dartford in Kent and Thurrock in Essex, is a vital road crossing over the River Thames which carries more than 50 million vehicles each year.
In the particular scene of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 where the Dartford Crossing makes its cameo, Harry, and other members of the Order of the Phoenix, are trying to get to safety.
To do this, the Order were transfigured into doppelgängers of Harry himself to avoid Voldemort finding the real one and were chased by Death Eaters right into the Dartford Crossing Tunnel.
After leaving Harry’s family home on Privet Drive, Hagrid dived headlong into the southern entrance of the Dartford Tunnel, which runs under the River Thames alongside the concrete supports of the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.
Despite successfully evacuating Harry to safety, the Order endured the tragic loss of their leader, Alastor Moody, and Harry's faithful owl, Hedwig, during the operation.
The Dartford Crossing has also been used as a filming location for other blockbuster movies, including London Spy (2015), Redemption (2013), and Essex Boys (2000).
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, the wizarding world faces its darkest hour as Harry, along with his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, embarks on a perilous quest to destroy the Horcruxes—dark objects containing fragments of Voldemort's soul.
Fleeing from Voldemort's forces, the trio navigates a treacherous landscape, uncovering clues left by Dumbledore.
Deathly Hallows Part 1, which was released in 2010, is the penultimate movie of one of the biggest movie franchise’s in the world, with the final movie, Harry Potter, and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, released in 2011.
