Being further away from the hustle and bustle of central London definitely has it’s advantages, one of which being the opportunity to explore quainter neighbourhoods such as Blackheath.

Blackheath village is known for its picturesque streets, hub of restaurants and bars as well as cute, independent shops.

Of course, Blackheath is also known for the heath it is named after which is a popular spot for runs and picnics in south east London.

The heath covers hundreds of acres making it a great spot for walking as we see some lighter nights this summer.

Blackheath begins at the southern side of Greenwich Park and then stretches into Lewisham.

There is also the well-loved, turquoise, second-hand bookshop in Blackheath aptly named “The Bookshop”.

This is the ultimate spot for anyone looking to browse some bookshelves for a peaceful weekend activity.

For foodies, Blackheath has no shortage of fun places to eat.

For example, Madeleine’s crepes, an award-winning creperie on Tranquil Vale.

There is also The Ivy, Buenos Aires Café, Le Bar a Vin, Buddha Taste and more.

As well as restaurants, there are also some much-loved pubs in Blackheath such as The Hare and Billet and The Crown.

This pub recently underwent a £750,000 revamp and now has a new look and a new menu.

The Crown reopened to the public in February 2022 after a short closure while the refurbishments were undertaken.

It has a great following of locals and is a traditional, London pub.

For those interested in history, it is worth knowing that Blackheath is the site of the Peasants’ Revolt led by Wat Taylor back in 1381.

It is the original home of one of the world’s largest golf clubs, also known as Royal Blackheath Golf Club.

All Saints’ Church is a staple location in Blackheath with lots of community spirit and regular events.

Anyone who loves a stately home would love Ranger’s House, situated on Chesterfield Walk.

It is a red brick Georgian mansion in the Palladian style which is not far from Greenwich park.

If theatre is what you’re after but you don’t fancy making the trek into central London then there is always Blackheath Halls.

Blackheath Halls is a performance venue showcasing a “diverse range of events” for theatre-goers to enjoy.

In May, the venue will host the The Dragon of Wantley opera, the Royal Greenwich Music Service, Brahms revisited, wine tastings and more.
