A CORONER has recorded an open verdict at an inquest into the death of a 20-year-old man who fell from a multi-storey car park.

The inquest at Dartford Coroner's Court heard John Day had argued with his girlfriend on the day of his death.

He died after suffering multiple injuries when he fell from the Thamesgate Centre in Gravesend at around 7pm on May 6.

Mr Day, of Grange Road, Gravesend, was taken to Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford, where he died at 7.55pm.

At the inquest, coroner Alan Blunsden read out a statement from Mr Day's mother, Barbara Phillips.

The court heard how in the weeks leading up to Mr Day's death, his moods had changed and he had become distant and unhappy, and was often in floods of tears.

In her statement, Mrs Phillips also said the Tottenham Hotspur fan had a temper and in the last few weeks before his death it had become worse.

He had also recently been rowing with his girlfriend of three years, Amber Holman.

On the day of his death, the plumber had met up with his girlfriend at around 3.30pm and they both went back to her house, but they had an argument and she asked him to leave.

When he got home he called her to say sorry and asked to go back round but she said no.

In her statement, Mrs Phillips said she heard him talking aggressively to someone on the phone, he was in a temper and thought he might smash something.

She asked him what was wrong but he accused her of interfering in his relationship.

Mrs Phillips and John's sister, Zoe, both went out to let him calm down.

His mother then received a text message from him and went straight home. However, he was not there.

Mr Blunsden said: "It is clear from the evidence the deceased fell from the top floor of a multi-storey car park.

"But it is not clear if he fell or decided to take his own life and fell."

He recorded an open verdict at the inquest today (August 18).
