Bromley Council has confirmed that talks to secure the future of the Churchill Theatre are “ongoing” as the theatre draws closer towards the “end of its life” with a new theatre needed to replace the existing one.
Earlier last year, Bromley Council revealed plans to revamp the Churchill Theatre, alongside other plans to move Bromley Library from its current position to the former Topshop site on the high street.
These new plans were announced as part of a collaborative scheme between Bromley Council and Trafalgar Entertainment, who currently operate Churchill Theatre, to “enhance“ Bromley High Street.
The current building that plays home to Churchill Theatre and the Central Library was first constructed in the 1970s, however according to the council the building is drawing towards the end of its life and will need a new, upgraded theatre to ensure its future.
In a statement, Bromley Council said that it would be continuing plans for a state-of-the-art theatre to remain “anchored” within Bromley Town Centre.
A spokesperson for Bromley Council said that whilst discussions remain ongoing with Trafalgar Group, it is inviting others to express interest to ensure the theatre will remain open.
They added that the council’s ambitions for Bromley Town Centre remain “undimmed” despite financial pressures.
At this current time Churchill Theatre remains open to the public as talks continue.
The full statement from Bromley Council read: “Whilst discussions remain ongoing with the theatre’s current operators Trafalgar Group, the Council is also going out to market to invite additional expressions of interest, to secure the future of the theatre, in line with its statutory duty to obtain best value for Council Tax payers money, prior to reaching a final decision.
“Our ambitions for Bromley Town centre remain undimmed, despite the well-publicised squeeze on local councils’ funding.
“There is still much work to be done and further news will follow when appropriate.”
