Council bosses have agreed to fund a second covert surveillance vehicle after demand for a pilot project "outstripped" supply.

Bromley Council approved the funding for a second CCTV vehicle after a similar initiative was successfully trialled earlier this year.

A report by council officers stated demand for that vehicle had "outstripped availability".

The local authority has set aside £15,000 for the vehicle but refuses to discuss the exact appearance or details of the venture for fear of risking future operations.

Executive portfolio holder for public protection and safety Councillor Colin Bloom said: "This is a very useful bit of kit and after the extraordinary success of the pilot it made sense to get another one.

"We don't want to give too many details away but this vehicle can just park up and record hours of footage. It helps with a more intelligience-based approach to crime."

Members of the Safer Bromley Partnership, including the police and fire services, can now bid to use the equipment to aid their operations.

Council chiefs agreed the funding at a council meeting on July 28 and the vehicle is expected to be on the streets later this year.
