SPECIALIST consultants have been appointed to research the need for new community facilities in Slade Green, when their present home is demolished to make way for housing.

Bexley Council has hired WM Enterprise to undertake the work following an outcry by residents in Slade Green.

They fear they will lose all or most of the services currently provided at the Howbury Centre in Slade Green Road.

The Howbury Centre and the surrounding former school playing fields are being sold to help finance the council's Bexley First project, to build a new civic centre in Bexleyheath.

It houses a variety of groups including Howbury Tumblers, a not-for profit pre-school group, and Howbury Friends, a charity which runs a network of community activities including an after-school and holiday club, and classes and activities for adults.

There is also a library, adult education classes and sports facilities.

Guidelines on the proposed redevelopment of the site have just been approved by council cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor John Waters.

Council leader, Councillor Teresa O'Neill has assured local people that until new facilities are available "the existing community space will continue to be available".

She urged people to get involved in WM Enterprise's research and contribute their views and ideas.

There will be a public consultation meeting after the summer holidays where people can put forward their ideas on a new centre.

There will also be a door-to-door residents' survey.

The findings will be analysed and reported back to the council.

The guidlines for the redevelopment include requirements for a new library, public space, children's play areas and a police office, as well as the new community facilities.

In addition to new houses the guidelines suggest a small amount of new shops, health or dentist facilities or a new church could also be acceptable.

Cllr Waters said: "This project represents a significant regeneration opportunity that will lead the way in improving development standards and quality design for Slade Green, and confirms the Council's commitment to improving the quality of life of people living and working in the area."
