A crime scene was put in place in Forest Hill after “possible human remains” were found.
Police were called to Sunderland Road at 5.30pm on Wednesday, February 21.
London Ambulance Service also went to the scene.
The remains have since been confirmed to be a non-human foetus.
The crime scene is now closed.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at about 17:30hrs on Wednesday, 21 February to reports of possible human remains found on Sunderland Road, SE23.
“Officers responded with LAS paramedics.
“A crime scene was in place but has now been closed.
“The remains were confirmed to be a non-human foetus.”
