A south London pub’s celebrity pig with a “big character” has died after 14 years of bringing joy to pub-goers.
The Conquering Hero is a family run pub in Upper Norwood, owned by husband and wife duo Ian and Victoria since 2005.
Their pet pig, Frances Bacon, has become famous among south Londoners, but after a period of illness she has recently died.
Victoria said: “It's very strange to not have Frances sleeping in front of the fire.
“For almost 14 years we were used to her being there and greeting us early in the morning waiting for her breakfast.
“She was very much part of our family and our children are feeling the loss deeply.
“Ian, myself and our three children were all with Frankie when she passed, which was very peaceful and she knew that we were there to comfort her.”
Frances the pig had been unwell for a few weeks and was under the care of her farm vets.
Her family has said they are “relieved” that she passed away peacefully and did not need to be euthanised.
Victoria added: “At the moment, there is no immediate plan underway to adopt another pet pig, it's a little too soon.
“Frances was the second pet pig in our family and so in time, if we were to find the right piglet to fit into our family, then we would certainly consider it.
“Pigs are wonderful pets, fabulous companions and full of character but Frances would be a tough act to follow.”
There has been lots of response from pub regulars who have sent kind messages, photos and stories of Frances, with some people sharing funny stories of Frances “rummaging in their handbags”.
She said: “There have been several children who have written condolence cards.
“Frances was a big character and part of the fabric of The Conquering Hero, though we never planned for her to be a 'pub pig' she firmly established herself as such and we know that lots of people are missing giving her ear and belly scratches when they visit.”
