SCHOOL children from Greenwich were among 2,700 young people from east London who took part in a new creative competition covering the five host Olympic boroughs.
Kidbrooke School, Greenwich, fought off competition from 15 other schools who were invited to take part in Promote Your Part of London to win a trip to Holden Point in Newham to see the Olympic Park being built.
The competition, organised by Young Enterprise, Oracle and Legacy 2020, involved a day's training with Young Enterprise and encouraged pupils to think about what the upcoming Olympic Games would mean for their local area and community.
These ideas were then expressed creatively and participants were also asked to promote their favourite aspects of the region online, uploading their suggestions and ideas using community learning website think.com.
Five finalists all received a trophy and Kidbrooke School's entry, Cos We're Cool Like That', which featured The Cutty Sark, scooped the main prize.
The group of Year 9 students who put together the school's entry were delighted to win the trip to Holden Point and the experience was beneficial to all who took part.
Speaking at the event where the winner was announced, Roy Howard from Young Enterprise said: "I thought the event today was fantastic. I spoke to all of the teachers and students and got a resounding thumbs-up about the project as a whole and the event today in particular."
Helena Yeaman, youth and sport project manager at London Legacy 2020 added: "It's important for the young people of east London to feel engaged with their changing surroundings in the run-up to the Olympic Games in 2012.
"This competition allowed students to communicate their relationship with east London to their peers all over the world in a fun and unusual way.
Millions of people will be visiting east London in the coming years."
