EMISSIONS from state schools are to be included in a carbon trading scheme from April 2010.
The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a mandatory scheme encouraging local authorities to reduce emissions.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn announced schools' energy use will be included in the emissions count of local authorities.
The CRC has been designed so it only includes large organisations which will save enough on energy bills to offset the costs of taking part.
Around 5,000 commercial and public sector organisations will be part of the scheme.
Mr Benn said: "Young people stand to gain most tomorrow from the action we take today. That's why schools should be included in the shift to a low carbon economy."
