Signalling work for south London, which was set to affect train services in February, has been moved to later in 2024.
The major works, which include the installation of a new signalling system, were originally due to close large parts of the National Rail and London Overground networks from Saturday, February 10 to Sunday, February 18.
However, the date has now been pushed back, with trains to run as normal from Monday, February 12 through to Friday, February 16 through the Tooting, Crystal Palace, Tulse Hill, and Peckham Rye areas.
Network Rail, the company overseeing the project, is working closely with train operators to plan another date later in the year for the new signalling system to be brought into use.
These upgrades are part of a series of improvements made to the tracks and signalling systems in south London - an investment programme worth over £400 million.
A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "We’ve seen a 55 per cent reduction in signalling delays following the switch-on of the renewed signalling between Balham and Victoria, and we’re expecting similar benefits from this.
"However, following internal reviews which form a critical part of the robust assurance process for any large-scale project of this kind, we’ve decided to re-plan the commissioning phase of this project and will announce a new date as soon as we can.
"We will still close these sections of track on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February as this will allow us to carry out critical work ahead of the commissioning to minimise disruption for passengers later.
"While we’re disappointed we can’t give passengers these benefits by February, we’re working closely with operators to bring the new system into use as soon as possible."
Though the upgrade has been postponed, disruptions will still occur over the weekend of February 10 and 11.
These disruptions include no Southern trains between London Bridge and Streatham via Peckham Rye and Tulse Hill, no trains to Beckenham Junction, and no trains between Balham and Norwood Junction via Crystal Palace or between Balham and Sydenham via Crystal Palace.
No Thameslink services will run between Herne Hill and Wimbledon / Sutton, and London Overground services between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction, and Sydenham to Crystal palace, will be suspended.
From Monday, February 12 to Friday, February 16, Southern trains, Thameslink trains, and London Overground services in the impacted areas are expected to run as usual.
Further disruptions will occur on Saturday, February 17 and Sunday, February 18, with London Overground services between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction suspended for additional Network Rail signalling improvements.
There will be no Southern trains between Tulse Hill and London Bridge on Sunday, February 18.
