A Crystal Palace micropub which serves as the first venue set up by a local brewery is described as being a labour of love, a community hub, and a celebration of craft beer culture.
The Douglas Fir’s journey began in 2016 when the space was transformed from a hairdresser into the micropub of Gipsy Hill Brewery's dreams.
The name, The Douglas Fir, pays homage to the wood used to build the bar, sourced through a creative exchange of beers.
The pub is located at 144 Anerley Road, SE20 8DL just a short walk from both Crystal Palace and Anerley stations.
Steve, the dedicated leader behind The Douglas Fir, is passionate about creating accessible spaces that prioritize community engagement.
Regulars and newcomers alike are drawn back by the promise of the freshest Gipsy Hill pint in a warm and inclusive environment.
Alice Jaunet, General Manager, told the News Shopper: "We traded some beers for Douglas fir pine, mounted it on pallets from our first malt delivery and fixed the taps on steam pipes from the brewery.
“Fair to say a lot of love and care has been poured into the space.”
The bar's interior boasts a cosy and welcoming atmosphere, adorned with monthly artist takeovers and décor donated by regulars and friends over the years.
The community-driven ethos extends beyond the walls, with The Douglas Fir regularly hosting brewery tours, community events, free-to-attend kids workshops, tap takeovers, as well as weddings and private parties.
Douglas Fir proudly serves a selection from Gipsy Hill Brewery and a curated list of craft brews from near and far.
The menu also features a great wine selection, local spirits, fairtrade soft drinks, and a range of low-and-no options, including their own alcohol-free beer.
As The Douglas Fir celebrates Gipsy Hill Brewery's 10-year anniversary this year, exciting plans are in the pipeline.
The bar is gearing up for a summer filled with fun events, limited edition specials brewed on-site, and a continued commitment to building community connections.
For those seeking a cozy spot with a refreshing pint and a commitment to community values, The Douglas Fir stands as a testament to the craft beer culture that Gipsy Hill Brewery has fostered over the past decade.
A Google Review says: “What a cute little pub. I’m all about atmosphere and I find it so warm and cosy. You can find local beer (Gipsy Hill IPA, Lager etc) and of course other drinks.
“They don’t serve food (please correct me if I’m wrong) but they have snacks.
“What I also like is that they’ve got artwork on their walls from local artists and you can sometimes purchase them.”
