All Londoners know to be wary of pickpockets when they are out and about, but they may not know that a south east London borough is also a prime spot for stolen mobiles.

According to data that Get Phone Repairs got from the Metropolitan Police, Southwark is the borough with the third highest borough of phone thefts.

In 2023, 4,376 phones were stolen in Southwark.

That means that in every 1,000 people, 13.67 people experienced having their phone stolen.

The total value of the phones stolen in the borough comes to £1,553,480.

A Get Phone Repairs spokesperson said: “The regeneration of the south bank over the last decade makes Southwark a pretty attractive prospect for would-be thieves and pickpockets.

“After all, with plenty of swanky bars and restaurants, the average smartphone in the area is likely to be worth a fair bit more.

“Throw in a number of popular attractions such as Tower Bridge and The Shard, and the area is packed with plenty of tourists, too.”

The next south London borough with a high number of phone thefts is Lambeth which came seventh on the list and is where 2,396 phones were stolen last year.

This means that per 1,000 people, 7.45 people have experienced a phone theft in Lambeth.

In total, £850,580 worth of phones were stolen throughout the year.

However, south east Londoners will be pleased to know that Bexley was the borough with the fewest reported phone thefts in 2023.

Only 63 phones were stolen with a grand total of £22,365.
