On Wednesday 29th November, music filled the hall of Newstead Wood School.

It was the Senior House Music Competition; performers were from Year 10-13. Pupils from Year 10 and 12 settled in to watch an afternoon of spectacular performances.

Representatives from each of the Newstead houses (Nightingale, Wren, Swift, Falcon, Griffin and Phoenix) performed for each of the three categories: solo singers, solo instrumentalists and ensemble. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for the ensemble performances to take place, so this will happen at another time.

Pieces ranged from Schubert, Liszt and Fauré to John Legend, One Republic and Hamilton, on instruments including voice, piano and cello. All performances were exceptional and it was a hard decision for the judges to select the winners.

Tingting, who won the solo instrumentalists category with her expressive performance of Schubert’s Impromptu in Ab on the piano said:

“I feel so grateful to have so many friends to support me, everyone did so well, and I know that I couldn’t have achieved this without the amount of practice and effort I put in.”

This competition was an excellent way to encourage students to try and do their best through practice and determination. Anyone can achieve anything (within human capability), if only one sets their mind to it. This competition was inspiring for those who want to improve on their musical journey but also for everyone who wants to achieve their goals.

Well done to all performers and those yet to come!
