A Greenwich school is “incredibly pleased” to have been rated as “good” by Ofsted following its recent inspection.
John Roan School, based on Westcombe Park Road in Blackheath was inspected on October 10 and 11 and was rated as good in every category: quality of education, leadership and management, personal development, behaviour and attitudes and sixth form provision.
Inspectors found that a high proportion of parents and carers are positive and would recommend the school to others.
One parent said “communication is great, teachers are accessible and my children are happy”, a comment that Ofsted felt echoed what most parents felt.
Ofsted also found “a strong sense of community” at the school as it is inclusive and celebrates diversity.
They added that pupils here are encouraged to treat everyone equally regardless of their background.
The school has implemented a QR code that pupils know they can use to tell staff if they have any safeguarding worries.
There is a culture of high expectations at John Roan School, Ofsted reported, including for pupil’s behaviour.
When they change lessons, they walk quietly and do not cause disruption to the school.
Sixth form students told Ofsted that they enjoy their learning and they have “flexibility in their choices to best suit their aspirations”.
For example, they have the option to take a combination of A-levels and relevant vocational courses.
Staff here are given “lots of subject training” so their knowledge is strong.
There is a focus found to be placed on helping pupils have their learning “stick” in their heads, however, inspectors did find that sometimes there is not a “precise focus” on making sure children understand what they are being taught.
Ofsted praised the school’s support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
For example, the Centre for Autism (CFA), gives pupils “the personalised support they need”.
Cath Smith, Principal at The John Roan School, said: “We are incredibly pleased to receive this ‘Good’ judgement from Ofsted, as confirmation of the achievements and progress our school has made in recent years.
“This outcome reflects the collective efforts of our whole school community and is something we will all take great pride in.
“What is particularly gratifying is that the inspectors recognised the culture and ethos we have worked hard to set within our school – not just one of ambition and excellence but also of kindness, character and respect.
“I know that our wonderful students and staff will continue to use this as fuel for further success in the years to come.”
Ben Antell, Director of Secondary Academies for United Learning, added: “This is a well-deserved result for the academy and reflects the significant transformation the school has achieved.
“The Inspectors’ report is testament to the hard work, dedication and ambition of staff and students alike.
“We would like to thank everyone who has supported the school throughout this time and played an important role in its success.”
