A historic South London pub could have a hotel added above it under new plans.

Greenwich Council has received an application to build an Aparthotel above Hardy’s Free House, a pub on Trafalgar Road.

The proposal would see a back extension and 10 Aparthotel rooms being added to the East Greenwich pub on an extra floor above the current building.

The front of the pub would also be updated to make it more “inviting” with a new design including two entrances, one for the pub and a dedicated door for the aparthotel rooms upstairs.

The new rooms would make use of the existing bedrooms in the upstairs of the building, which have been empty for 10 years according to council documents.

The project would see 10 new rooms with en-suite showers and dining areas for short-term stays up to 90 days.

Planning documents from Urbanist Architecture, on behalf of MAF Real Estate, said the pub dates back to 1926.

Three former applications to build hotel rooms above the pub have been sent in recent years, with plans from 2010 seeking to add an additional eight storeys onto the building.

Planning documents said the current scheme proposed a single additional storey due to Trafalgar Road having generally low rise buildings.

The plans have received 28 objections from neighbours, with concerns over the impact of the development on nearby amenity and the rise in noise levels.

Council officers said in their report that the project is required to proactively reduce noise impacts where possible and that the sunlight and outlook of neighbouring properties should not be affected.

Planning documents said: “The proposal seeks to upgrade what is currently a pub with low-quality accommodation above that makes little contribution of central Greenwich’s important visitor economy.”

They added: “The new arrangement combines a thorough refurbishment of the property with a sensitively designed single additional floor that is respectful of the nearby East Greenwich Conservation Area.”

The plans to build an aparthotel above Hardy’s Free House will be discussed at a planning committee meeting for Greenwich Council on November 14.
