As the October half-term approaches, Greenwich Council has taken a proactive step to ensure that no child goes hungry during the school break.

Children across the borough will have the opportunity to pick up free packed lunches from local libraries and adventure play centres from Monday, October 23 to Friday, October 27.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has partnered with the Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency (GCDA) to commission these holiday meals, with support from Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL). The goal is to offer a helping hand to families in need during these tough times.

The initiative aims to make the process as hassle-free as possible for parents and children as all they need to do is show up at the venue to receive a free meal.

In addition to the free meals, local libraries will be hosting a variety of creative activities to keep children engaged and entertained.

This gives parents the opportunity to take a break during the school holidays. Some of the activities offered include spooky biscuit decorating at Charlton House Library, Lego Robotics at the Woolwich Centre Library, and Messy Morning craft sessions at various library locations.

For those looking for even more options to keep the family entertained during the half term, Better leisure centres have also organized a full schedule of fun and affordable activities.

Councillor Matt Morrow, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “No child should go hungry just because they’re not in school, so we’re pleased to be able to provide free holiday meals again this October half-term.

“The Royal Borough of Greenwich is committed to providing support for families and children who may be struggling financially.

“Schemes like free holiday meals are needed now more than ever due to the unsettling cost of living crisis we’re currently going through and is part of the Council’s effort to tackle child food poverty.”
