A mum from Catford has told how her children are now scared to be in their house after their campervan exploded.

On September 4 at 11.40pm, firefighters were called to reports of the woman’s motorhome on fire on Doggett Road.

The motorhome was destroyed in the fire, and three homes were damaged by the blaze, including this woman’s.

The woman explained: “The fire took out the windows in my front room and the bedroom upstairs – my daughters’ bedroom.

“The council left me two days and one night with no windows at all or no board up, they promised they would be out, but they didn’t come.

“The next night they put up boards, but they told me that they needed scaffolding to do the top windows, so they have just gaffer taped it.”

The woman says her windows are still boarded and taped up, despite the fire being two weeks ago.

She explained: “I am asking everyday what is happening, and all I am being told is that it is ‘with a contractor and they will contact me’.

“We have all been affected by this as we couldn’t get out of the house because of the flames, my children and I were huddled together at the back of my very small garden petrified of the camper exploding.

“I can’t sleep, and my kids are scared to be in the house.”

The woman – who wishes to remain anonymous – says she has experienced a wide range of problems with her temporary accommodation house on Doggett Road in Catford.

She has lived in the house, which is looked after by Lewisham Homes, with her two children for the past five years and she says there have been a number of issues since they moved in.

She told the News Shopper: “I have experienced damp, infestations of mice, a leak in my dining room coming from my bathroom, floorboards up in both of my children’s bedrooms, and my boiler breaks down all the time and no one has helped me.”

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council told the News Shopper that a housing officer visited the property the next day, and that Lewisham Homes carried out work to make the window “safe as quickly as possible”.

They also said that the motorhome was uninsured.

The full statement said: “Earlier this month, an uninsured motorhome belonging to the woman and parked outside her accommodation caught fire and exploded, causing damage to the property and neighbouring properties.

“A housing officer visited the property the next day to meet the woman and inspect the property.

“Lewisham Homes carried out work to make the windows safe as quickly as possible and we are liaising with the woman regarding the installation of new windows.”

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council added: “With over 10,000 families on our housing waiting list and a severe shortage of social housing, we have to use temporary accommodation to house families without a permanent home.

“When residents experience issues with their temporary accommodation, we act to resolve them as quickly as possible.”
