New information obtained by the News Shopper has revealed the roads with the highest number of potholes in Lewisham – as reported over the last three years.

A Freedom of Information request submitted to Lewisham Council has revealed which roads in Lewisham received the highest number of pothole reports between 2019 and 2022.

The roads that received the highest number of pothole reports within the three year period were Hither Green Lane, Brockley Road, Evelyn Street, Honor Oak Park and Baring Road.

In total, 7,709 pothole reports were made to Lewisham Council between 2019 and 2022 with a total of £121,751 spent on pothole repair works between the same period.

42 new compensation claims were submitted to Lewisham Council relating to potholes between 2019 and 2022, while 15 claims were paid and 30 were rejected during the same period.

2019-2020

Between 2019 and 2020 the road with the highest recorded number of potholes reported to Lewisham Council was Hither Green Lane with 105 reports.

This was followed by Brockley Road with 103 potholes reported and Whitefoot Lane with 98 reports made to Lewisham Council.

A total of 2,728 reports of potholes were made in 2019 across 314 Lewisham Roads.

Information also revealed that a total of £41,839 was spent in 2019 in pothole repair works.

13 claims were made during this same period for compensation, while four claims were paid by the council and 12 rejected, costing the council £55,589 that year.

2020-2021

In 2020, a total of 2,697 reports of potholes were made to Lewisham Council which spanned across 297 roads.

The roads with the highest number of pothole reports submitted by Lewisham Council in 2020 were Evelyn Street and Honor Oak Park - which each had a total of 103 reports made.

This was followed by Whitefoot Lane which received 98 reports that year.

In 2020, £43,772 was spent on pothole repair works by the council and a further £30,432 spent on compensation claims.

14 compensation claims were made to Lewisham Council in 2020, with five paid and nine rejected.

2021-2022

In 2021, Lewisham Council received 2,284 reports of potholes spanning across 285 of the roads in Lewisham.

Evelyn Street had the highest number of pothole reports with a total of 135 submitted to Lewisham Council that year.

This was followed by Brockley Road with 114 and Sydenham Hill with 72 for the same period.

Here’s a breakdown of the top 10 roads for 2021:

A total of £36,140 was spent on pothole repair works in 2021 with a further £3,927 paid in compensation claims.

In 2021, Lewisham Council received 15 compensation claims related to potholes, with six paid and nine ejected.

A spokesperson for Lewisham Council said that despite budget cuts the council has worked to keep roads in good condition repairing “thousands” of potholes every year.

Cllr Louise Krupski, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Action, said: “Despite significant budget cuts from central government over the last 13 years, we’re working hard to ensure our roads are in good condition, repairing thousands of potholes every year to help all road users make smooth journeys around the borough.”
