A spokesperson for South East London Integrated Care System said: "NHS South East London is aware of the publication of GP data on 31 August 2023, covering activity and usage of GP appointments historically, including same day appointments, by NHS Digital.

"These new statistics do not necessarily give a complete view of GP same day appointments in South East London.

"The data consists of experimental statistics, meaning that there will be degrees of fluctuation and variation in the data as practices record the data themselves.

"Practices throughout South East London have committed to improving the consistency of data recording, which will increase the reliability of this data in the future.

"As an ICB, our priority is to ensure that South East London residents have access to high quality primary care services. To this aim, practices do their best to accommodate requests for same day appointmen.

"However, practices are not required to provide a set number of same day appointments. Instead, they aim to assess patient requests in order to prioritise and schedule appointments with the most appropriate clinician.

"This also ensures that GPs can focus on the most complex patients first.

"Many of our practices are also managing significant vacancies which adds to the workforce pressures.

"We are working to increase the size of clinical teams in GP practices and making dedicated efforts in South East London to recruit and retain skilled professionals into primary care.

"Whilst we work in the context of high demand and huge challenges in primary care, we are working on improving experiences of those using primary care services and ask patients to work with us by using the right service at the right time.

"High street pharmacists can help with minor ailments and conditions and refer to a GP if required."

"Our SEL wide primary care campaign aims to ensure that everyone in South East London gets the help and professional support they need.

"The campaign explains how the expanded primary care team is working."
