A man who miraculously survived falling off a balcony in Malta which broke 28 bones has started a new DJing business with a fellow DJ he met whilst in hospital.
Paul Cartwright, 49, was holidaying with his girlfriend in Malta on August 24, 2019, when he fell four storeys from a hotel balcony after what he says was sleepwalking.
As a result of the incident, Paul was put into a coma after shattering his leg, pelvis, back, foot and ribs.
Paul has praised the Maltese doctors and emergency services in Malta for saving his life, as he says he would not have survived the fall if it wasn’t for them.
Paul told the News Shopper: “The only reason I survived is that I first landed on a palm tree and then on the concrete.
“If not for the fast reaction of the emergency services and the professionalism of the Maltese doctors, I would probably not have survived this fall.
“That is why I'm also hugely grateful to Malta for that.”
Paul told the News Shopper that he was “physically incapacitated” whilst in hospital and headed to social media to seek help.
Paul explained: “During my hospital stay, I found myself in a foreign land, far from family, and physically incapacitated.
“Through the power of social media, I asked for assistance on Facebook, seeking any kind of help.
“As fate would have it, Mark Ireland, a Hed Kandi DJ, connected me with Robert Korzeniewski, also known as Mr. Root, a Polish DJ and music producer living in Malta.”
Paul says that Robert – AKA Mr. Root - visited him in hospital the next day “without hesitation”, and brought along clothing, food, drinks, and “companionship”.
“His selfless actions were not prompted by any request; he simply wanted to extend a helping hand in a time of need”, Paul added.
After Paul’s eventual return to the UK, he embarked on a rigorous journey of rehabilitation, relearning how to walk and care for himself.
Throughout the process, Paul says she “held onto a promise” he made to Robert – to help him get recognition as a musician, DJ, and producer.
Paul added: “Robert had collaborated with iconic figures like the 90s superstar singer Rozalla, and had even remixed disco legends KC and The Sunshine Band and Nile Rodgers.
“My career in the music industry spans over 30 years, rooted in the UK garage scene, while Robert's forte lies in crafting exceptional house and disco music.”
Last year, both Paul and Robert’s paths converged to co-founding a new record label named Proper Decent Choons, blending their individual talents and skills to release new music.
“Several of our tracks have already graced DJ charts and playlists around the world”, Paul added, “Robert's unwavering support and belief in me rejuvenated my passion for the industry, prompting my return to the very essence of what I love”.
“Our story signifies that two artists, brought together by chance, can not only establish a profound friendship but also collaborate to produce something extraordinary.”
