A grass fire near a childcare centre in Orpington has spread, causing the classrooms of the centre to catch alight.

London Fire Brigade sent eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters to the scene on Sandy Lane.

Part of two pre-school buildings are currently on fire.

The Brigade's emergency control officers have received over 25 calls regarding the blaze.

The incident was reported at 4.09pm and fire crews from Sidcup, Orpington, Bexley, Eltham, and nearby fire stations are currently at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The fire has produced heavy smoke and residents are being advised to keep their windows and doors closed until the situation improves.

Road closures have also been put in place, leading to heavy traffic, and people are being urged to avoid the area if possible.

Station Commander Stephen Irvine said: "A grass fire near the childcare centre spread, causing the classrooms of a nearby childcare centre to catch alight.

"The fire is producing heavy smoke and we're urging people in the local area to keep their windows and doors closed until it subsides.

"There are road closures in place causing heavy traffic, so please also avoid the area if possible, whilst we make the scene safe."

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters have been called to a fire at a childcare centre on Sandy Lane in Orpington.

“Part of two pre-school buildings are currently alight.

“The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have taken more than 25 calls to the blaze.

“The Brigade was called at 1609. Fire crews from Sidcup, Orpington, Bexley, Eltham and surrounding fire stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not known at this time.”
