Two more green spaces in Lewisham have won Green Flag Awards - taking the total number in Lewisham to 23.
The Green Flag is an internationally known standard, recognising parks and green spaces for their accessibility, biodiversity, cleanliness, community involvement and safety.
Lewisham retained all 21 of its existing Green Flags this year, with two additional green spaces newly added to the list.
Forster Memorial Park in Downham was one.
The park, which was formerly woodland, was later turned into a memorial garden for the sons of Lord Foster, who were killed during World War II.
The park now features an outdoor gym, cycling route, play area and two full-sized football pitches, as well as a café.
The other was St Mary’s Church Yard, which received a Green Flag Community Award.
St Mary’s Church Yard, managed by Lewisham Council with the aid of the parish, offers a therapeutic garden within the hustle and bustle of Lewisham High Street.
The gardens were created through a collaborative effort between the Ladywell Unit and St Mary’s Church in 2017 in a bid to promote mental wellbeing.
The outdoor space features a wildflower meadow, orchard, woodland area, and a raised bed growing vegetables and salads.
The gardens also host regular drop-in gardening sessions every Tuesday between 1pm and 3pm.
Cllr Andre Bourne, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Gaining two more prestigious Green Flag awards is fantastic news for Lewisham!
“As an inner-city borough, we are very proud of our award-winning parks, green spaces and nature reserves that bring so many health and wellbeing benefits to our residents.
“The news that two more green spaces in Lewisham have achieved Green Flags is testament to the hard work and dedication of the teams that make our green spaces sanctuaries that everyone can enjoy.
“Many thanks to all our friends’ groups in the borough, our partners, Glendale and our council parks’ team.”
Paul Todd, Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag award scheme manager, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Forster Memorial Park and St Mary’s Church Yard in achieving new Green Flag Awards in Lewisham.
“These are vital green spaces for the community, bringing people together and providing opportunities to lead healthy lifestyles.
“The staff and volunteers do so much and everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.”
