A man has been arrested in Welling following an assault on a police officer leaving them in hospital with injuries.
In a tweet yesterday (June 17) at 11:47pm MPS Welling said officers from Blendon and Welling Wards attended a “known drug hotspot” in Welling on a proactive search.
Several males were located within a stairwell of the area that was being searched.
However, when officers attempted to detain them, one officer was allegedly assaulted, leaving them in hospital from their injuries.
More units were deployed and one male was later arrested for: Possession with intent to supply cannabis, Assault on an emergency worker and Criminal Damage.
Met Police say that an investigation is underway and that the incident has left one officer with “possible ligament damage.”
The full tweet from MPS Welling said: “Officers from Blendon & Welling Wards have proactively attended a known drug hotspot in Welling were they located a number of males within the stairwell.
“Upon trying to detain them they have assaulted officers causing injuries which required A&E attention.
“Thankfully with quick actions to deploy PAVA & more units arriving to assist lead to one male being arrested for;
- Possession with intent to supply cannabis
- Assault on an emergency worker
- Criminal Damage
“Officers are safe & well but one suffered possible ligament damage.
“It's times like this that the importance of officer safety & nearby units being able to assist becomes very apparent.
“It also goes to show how something can develop in a heartbeat.
“An investigation is now underway.
“We'd like to thank all officers for rushing to assist.”
