A Greenwich food business has created a Hawaiian SPAM burger, exclusively available in the Canteen Food Hall and Bar at the Greenwich Peninsula.

Huli Huli is the newest to join Greenwich Peninsula’s Canteen Food Hall and Bar, located in the Design District of the Peninsula.

The new invention was created by husband-and-wife duo Igor and Ann, who founded the Huli Huli business selling Hawaiian street food in 2019.

SPAM, standing for Specially Pressed American Meats, is a salted and canned meat made with pork, and was a food staple for many households during World War II and its harsh rationing.

Today, Hawaii is the world’s biggest importer for SPAM, with Hawaii and its population of 1.4 million consuming 7 million cans a year.

Huli Huli owners Igor and Ann said: “We love SPAM! We couldn’t offer an authentic taste of Hawaii without including SPAM in the menu.

“SPAM is an iconic and much-loved traditional food for the Hawaiian people with generations of families putting their spin on it.

“This is the Huli Huli spin: our burger takes this infamous ‘luncheon meat’ and turns it into something extraordinary, with all the lip-smacking flavours of the islands wrapped up in a deliciously soft bun. You really have to taste it to believe it!”

The burger can be found alongside Huli Huli’s large menu, featuring both meat and Vegan options that bring a mix of Hawaiian foods with influences from Polynesian, Japanese, Asian and other American styles of cooking.

Guests can try the Hawaiian SPAM burger for £8.25 exclusively at Huli Huli in the Canteen Food Hall and Bar in the Greenwich Peninsula.
