Judgements welcome, I don’t eat steak.
I don’t know what it is, why it is, and it probably isn’t going to change – I just don’t eat it.
But as a lover of going out for dinner and trying new places, I feel like I’m missing out on one of London’s best offerings: steakhouses.
I appreciate that often steak restaurants do have other things on the menu, but I’ve always been quite nervous to rely on them.
I went to one of London’s best restaurants, STK, and I didn’t regret my decision.
In fact, quite the opposite – and I’d definitely go back.
I went to the STK on The Strand, which is part of the ME London hotel, and is one of three STK restaurants in London, including also Westminster and Stratford.
It’s central, boujiee, modern and feels like a “place to be” with floral and atmospheric décor.
It’s described by STK as a “premium destination renowned for serving the finest USDA prime beef and world-class service, in a decadent and social setting”.
I can’t comment on the beef, but definitely agree with everything else.
The restaurant was actually quieter than I expected when I went on a Thursday night.
There were people in there, it just wasn't full, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide-ranging array of customers.
Families, couples, friends.
Alongside my request for STK’s sweetest and fruitiest cocktails which were tasty, suitably strong and sweet and fruity, I started with the yellowfin tuna tartare.
It came with avocado and taro chips and the portion was pretty big.
I sometimes find when you have tartare starters they’re a little bit lacking, but this was decent sized, fresh tasting and not too filling.
My boyfriend had the mini burgers which came with a “special sauce” in a sesame seed bun.
He was drooling over these and even as a non-avid Instagrammer he absolutely had to put a picture up for his followers to see.
For mains, typically, he chose the steak – which he did say was as good as it was made out to be.
He paired this with the mashed potato, which I might have eaten lots of, completely accidentally of course… I’m a mashed potato lover and this one was creamy, not too sickly, and top notch.
My long-awaited main course, in a steakhouse, was salmon.
I love fish and eat it pretty much everyday and everywhere I go, so I know what I like and I know what I don’t.
This salmon was good. It was grilled, and had that nice grill flavour to it.
It came paired with some greenery, which I appreciated, and I ordered the chips to go along side it.
Again the portion was a really decent size, and I was really full after it.
But if you know me, my sweet tooth overrides any fullness, and I couldn’t resist ordering a cookie and ice cream for dessert.
There’s a delicious sounding donut dessert offering at STK, which unfortunately they didn’t have, but I guess I probably saved my arteries by missing out on.
The kind waiter also brought a piece of cake out for my boyfriend’s birthday, and after devouring the two I was well and truly full, happy, and tipsy.
I really enjoyed my evening as a non-steak eater in a steakhouse, and if I’m honest I’d definitely do it again.
