The first heat-health alert of the year has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency for London and other parts of England this weekend.

A heatwave is expected to see the UK record its hottest day of the year so far this weekend.

Temperatures are set to increase on Thursday and Friday before potentially peaking at 30 degrees on Saturday.

The warm weather is set to remain well above average during night-time, according to the Met Office.

The UK Health Security Agency has stated that the upcoming temperatures will “primarily” impact people over the age of 65 or people with pre-existing health conditions such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Parts of the country are predicted to be hotter than Marbella, Ibiza and Tenerife over the weekend as a “plume of warm air” moves in from the south.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at the UK Health Security Agency, said: “In the coming days we are likely to experience our first sustained period of hot weather of the year so far, so it’s important that everyone ensures they keep hydrated and cool while enjoying the sun.

“If you have friends, family or neighbours who you know are more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather, it is important you check in on them and ensure they are aware of the forecasts and are following the necessary advice.”

The impact of Storm Oscar will not affect the UK; however, it will drive the warm plume of air into southern parts of the UK.

The warning also covers six regions in England, , East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, South East and South West, and is in place from 9am on Friday to Monday morning.
