A popular pub in Greenwich has reopened its doors and the News Shopper has an exclusive first look.
The Star of Greenwich, previously known as the Star and Garter, shut for good after a man was reportedly stabbed outside in August 2021.
It was given a new licence by Greenwich Council in November 4 for it to reopen as the Star of Greenwich.
Three lifelong friends, James Gadsby Peet, Lisa Donohoe, and Kirsty Dunlop, then decided to take over Old Woolwich Road pub.
The trio were left initially “devastated” as the pub closed but then thought it was the perfect opportunity to save an important “community asset”.
James explained: “We love that pub and being a regular there it was disappointing to see.
“Kirsty was the first to notice that the Star was going to be redeveloped.
“We were immediately motivated to do what was possible to try and save this community asset.
“It’s important because a pub is a place where a community can get together and talk to each other.
“So this is why we decided to save it and do something of our own for the community.”
Pictures from the venue show the finalised look which has been in the works since March.
Upon arrival, customers will be greeted by a bright green and yellow sign, which reads: “The Star of Greenwich.”
More space has been created with new furniture throughout and an upgraded darts corner and bar.
A fundraiser was launched by James, Lisa, and Kirsty before the opening to raise money for buying essential stock, a dishwasher, and paying for professional staff to run the pub.
James said: “Our aim is to bring together different parts of the local community and provide a welcoming space.
“Anyone can come together to build relationships and support one another. That’s what pubs are for.
“I’ve found that pubs are a great way in meeting new people, and getting together so this is why this project made sense.”
It is open from 4pm until 11pm on Thursdays, 3pm until 11pm on Fridays, and 12pm until 11pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
