A bar in Deptford serves its drinks in teacups and customers sit on the owners late Nan’s furniture.
Nestled under the oldest surviving carriage ramp in the country, Little Nan's in Deptford drinking spot is a nostalgic time warp.
Launched in 2013, Little Nan’s began by fitting out the bar in the furniture belonging to owner Tristan’s late Nan and serving drinks in her old crockery.
In setting up the bar, Tristan says the aim was to create “a safe space for everyone".
He told the News Shopper: "It’s a home away from home where the whole community is welcome.
"Little Nan's was first launched in the windowless back room of my favourite nightclub on Deptford Broadway."
A year later, the bar had to leave that location and, Tristan describes how he "toured Little Nan’s Bar as a pop-up all across London, until finally settling back in Deptford.”
The carriage ramp Little Nan's now calls home was built in 1832.
Tristan explained how “over the years it had many uses, from storage of fruit and cattle, to then being used as mechanics garages.”
It was in 2016 that developers did the arches up, to create Deptford Market Yard, and Little Nan’s was the first bar to open up.
Tristan explained: "Little Nan’s is centred around Maximalist Kitsch interiors - a design idea that focuses on filling spaces with colours, patterns and all sorts of different items.
"The decoration overwhelms the small venue, from fairy lights, plants, and tapestries to countless emblems of British culture.
"More is more in our heads."
The decoration comes from the interior of the home of Tristan's late late Nan.
He added: “It’s all about the nostalgic and sentimental things in life, I just love stuff."
Little Nan's' main British icon is Eastenders' Pat Butcher, and once Pam St Clement came to the bar for afternoon tea.
Tristan told the News Shopper: "She is our Queen, and we are huge fans of everything she represents.
“The Leopard Print, the BIG earrings, the love affairs, the drama, the friendship qualities, the family values she possesses.
"The bar even has a ‘Queen Patricia’ bust.
"Serving our icon blew our minds."
The bar still serves its drinks in crockery, something that Tristan describes as “house party vibes, but round your Nan’s.”
Don’t be fooled though, the drinks are not the usual type served up during afternoon tea at Nan’s.
The bar offers local craft beers, Red Stripe and Guinness as well as ‘Pat Butchers Pale Ale’, wines, spirits, and slushies.
Tristan said: "Our Vodka Candy Shots are super nice, with Werther’s Original being the most popular.”
Little Nan’s also serves food such as Loaded Disco fries, which are topped with either chicken strips, no bull burger pattie, fish fingers or bacon, and fish finger sandwiches with all the fillings.
Little Nan’s “love a party and a celebration,” so the bar offers free hire of their events space ‘Grandad’s Shed’.
