A pub in Lewisham which has a focus on its love for music has an interesting feature in its huge beer garden – a 1950s train carriage named the Firkin Express.
The Fox and Firkin located on Lewisham High Street is known for its range of musical performances, with each week packed with events showcasing a diverse mix of sounds.
Fox and Firkin first opened in April 2021 and prior to this it was a rock venue – meaning that the pub has always kept its musical roots.
Jenny Rumbold, the director’s assistant at the pub, told the News Shopper: “We have bands from all over London and further – every weekend we are packed with music events.
“We are very varied in what we offer.
“The garden is always full of life and depending on the artist on a weekend the pub can turn into a bit of a nightclub - it brings in a real array of people.”
The pub has a spacious beer garden complete with cosy festival tents and lighting to set the mood - as well as an outside bar to avoid that trek back inside for a pint.
The highlight of the venue however, has to be the 1950s train carriage, appropriately named the Firkin Express.
It’s available for parties and small events to book out for special occasions.
The carriage comprises of an open area and two intimate private areas which are vintage style compartments.
Jenny explained that the train is from Bristol and was brought over on a huge lorry.
She added: “It was difficult to get it in here let’s put it that way.”
The pub is also about to take a leap into something new and launch its own brewery.
Jenny explained that there is a building at the back of the venue which had been renovated to host Firkin Brewery which should be up and running by mid-July.
The Fox and Firkin is looking to have its own creations available at the bar as well hoping to sell their drinks to other venues in the near future.
Whilst the pub is known for its high-energy atmosphere and evenings of music, Jenny also explained that they get a wide variety of customers at the pub including families looking to enjoy some food, pub quiz fans or groups of friends enjoying quiet afternoons soaking up the sun.

Jenny said: “You get all kinds of people from all walks of life in here – sometimes depending on what music is on.”
There are independent vans in the garden serving pizza and ribs and there are plenty of options at the bar including craft ales and cocktails.
Jenny went on to praise the staff at the Fox and Firkin: “The staff are really on it and the team has such a strong moral.
“Everyone that works here is really into their music which is a great boost at the weekend - they sometimes have a bit of a dance behind the bar.”
The pub also has a sister venue in Brixton located named “Loki” - which hosts music and club nights.
