A Deptford mum was in court after police found bullets in a safe she was looking after for her drug dealer neighbour.
Mum-of-two Jennifer Rose appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday (May 2) accused of possessing firearm ammunition without a firearm certificate.
The 39-year-old said she agreed to look after the safe for a friend on her street who had been convicted of conspiring to supply cannabis.
However, Rose said she did not know what was inside the safe and had no way of opening it.
Rose had been in possession of the safe for around a year when police turned up at her family home with a warrant on September 30, 2021.
Officers found a large amount of cash which was seized, as well as a safe which was inside Rose’s bedroom wardrobe.
When the safe was opened police found 18 Winchester Brand Cartridges inside.
The case was set to go to trial as Rose insisted she did not know what was inside the safe.
However, on the day of the trial Judge Simon Farrell told Rose she has no legal defence.
“The law of possession is such that when a person is in possession of a safe in those circumstances they are in possession of the contents of the safe,” Judge Farrell said.
Rose therefore pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition for a firearm without a certificate.
She was given a conditional discharge of 12 months – as Judge Farrell stressed that he wanted to impose the lowest sentence possible.
