A police investigation has been launched after a fire in Woolwich destroyed four vehicles and damaged part of a building that was being used as a church.

The brigade took 20 calls relating to the fire and sent out crews at 10.01am yesterday (May 2). 

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Plumstead and East Greenwich fire stations brought the blaze on Spray Street under control by 11.28am.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police.

The Metropolitan Police has been approached for further comment.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters tackled a fire on Spray Street in Woolwich yesterday (May 1).

“Four motor vehicles were destroyed by fire.

“Part of a building being used as a church was also damaged by fire.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade's 999 Control Officers received 20 calls about the fire.

“The Brigade was called at 10.01am and the fire was under control by 11.28am.

“Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Plumstead and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police.”
