New data obtained in an FOI by the News Shopper has revealed the highest speeds recorded by three speed cameras on East Rochester Way in 2022.
The map below shows the three highest speeds caught by three cameras on the A2 East Rochester Way.
A 20 mile per hour speed limit could potentially be introduced to the road following safety concerns from residents nearby.
Carl Fleming and Julie Benstead, who have both lived in Rochester Way for more than 20 years each, said it is a “miracle” that crashes are not happening every day.
The pair have called for Greenwich Council to “take some responsibility” and to install speed cameras and impose speed limits.
Carl told the News Shopper: “It's a 30 mph road and I'm not exaggerating when I know some people are coming up here at about 80mph.
“It’s honestly a death trap for the people living here.
“I do fear for my family and other families on this road when someone could be badly hurt or eventually killed.”
A meeting was held by Greenwich Council’s Highway Committee on March 8 to discuss traffic calming measures.
Owners of vehicles that are caught speeding will be sent a Notice of Intended Prosecution as well as a Section 172 notice within 14 days of the recorded incident.
They, or the company secretary in the case of a company vehicle, must return the notice within 28 days, notifying the police who was driving the vehicle.
The matter will be referred to the magistrates court in the event that the notice is ignored Depending on the speed, the driver could receive an option for a speed awareness course, a fixed penalty notice or a letter telling them to go to court.
The maximum speed limit for all three speed cameras is 50 miles per hour.
