Woolwich has been named one of the best places to live in Greater London by The Sunday Times – here’s why.
In this year's The Sunday Times Best Places to Live list, two south east London boroughs were named to be the best places to live in Greater London.
Woolwich was selected because of the recent opening of the Elizabeth line which has “transformed an unheralded stretch of southeast London” into an “exciting” place to live.
The Elizabeth Line, which was built to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, officially opened on May 17, 2022.
The line, which runs through Woolwich, travels to central London stations including Paddington, Liverpool Street, Farringdon, Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street.
Woolwich was also named for its views of the Thames, as well as having a diverse range of shops, drinking spots and eateries to choose from.
The Sunday Times named Woolwich “a fertile ground for young professionals seeking a foothold on the London property ladder.”
The south east London borough of Beckenham also made the list for its “outstanding schools”, green spaces and choice of stations to commute from.
The 2023 Best Places to Live list includes seven London areas out of the total of 72 locations in the UK.
Crouch End was named the best place to live in London out of seven London areas mentioned on account of its green spaces, Victorian and Edwardian homes and independent shops.
Helen Davies, the editor of Best Places to Live 2023, said: “When times are tough, where we live matters more than ever.
“Attractive surroundings, good neighbours and a comfortable home are the best defences when the stresses of modern life seem overwhelming.
“This guide is a celebration of towns, cities and villages that are each a fantastic place to live in 2023 from Orkney to Felixstowe, the Chew Valley to Manchester city centre.
“Whether you’re downsizing, trading up or getting onto the property ladder, there will be somewhere to suit you.”
