A young actor from Bromley says starring as THE Peter Pan has been “very exciting”, but he is currently putting his Hollywood career on pause to finish his GCSEs.
Alexander Molony is to hit TV screens across the world this April as he will star as the boy who never grew up, in Disney’s latest live action Peter Pan & Wendy.
The 16-year-old has hopes and ambitions to pursue a career in acting, with dreams in starring in more feature films and series – specifically murder mysteries.
But for now, Alexander is taking a pause on his Hollywood dream and shifting his energy into his GCSEs at The Trinity School in Croydon, as he says they are “very important to him”.
Alexander told the News Shopper: “The first audition was just one-to-one with the casting director, and I prepared with my Drama teacher at school, but I didn’t anything would really come of it.
“Over a month and a half later, when I’d totally forgotten about it, I was invited to a three-day chemistry and stunts audition process in London.
“The first day had me and the other Peter hopefuls working with the potential Wendy’s - the Peters and Wendy’s came from all over and some had flown in from the USA and Canada.
“On the second day, the Michael and John candidates were mixed in, and the final day was stunt-work.
“Two weeks later, I was asked to go back into London and audition again, meaning I had to come back from my half term holiday to Scotland.
“However, it was worth it as a week later, my mum got a call saying I got the job.
“When my mum told me I got the part, I didn’t really know how to react so I asked if could have a chocolate mousse.”
In the upcoming Disney movie, Alexander will star alongside Ever Anderson as Wendy, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, and Jude Law as Captain Hook, who Alexander says was “really supportive” when they were on set.
He explained: “It was particularly nice when Peter and Hook had scenes together and Jude and I would get to chat together up on the Crow’s Nest or on the dinghy.
“My favourite thing about playing Peter Pan is definitely the stunts.
“While I couldn’t dangle off cliffs, I could do the general flying and sword fighting, which were all tiring but really fun.
“Pranks were very common on set too, but one time, Ever (Wendy) and I were doing a flying sequence, and it was sort of a mock race between Peter and Wendy.
“Ever would soar off and leave me behind, but I had a little word with the stunt riggers, and on the next shot, Ever went flying backwards.
“Her reaction was priceless.”
Claire Louise, Alexander’s mum, says there were quite a few boys auditioning the role of Peter, so she assumed it would be a long shot if Alexander would get through auditions.
But after a Christmas stacked with treats, Claire saw that an open call had been put out for the roles of Peter and the Darling children, and that the casting directors were looking worldwide.
Claire told the News Shopper: “At this point we hadn’t heard, and I had totally written it off.
“Then, totally out of the blue, at the end of January, I heard that Alexander had been recalled and was invited to the screen test/chemistry stage where he would meet the director, producers, and US casting director, who were flying to the UK.
“The three day process was nerve wracking.
“We were told that we would hear either way within two weeks, so I was sure I would be getting a call saying he hadn’t got the part.
“However, over February half term when Alexander had gone away with his dad and brother, I got a call saying that they wanted to see him again.
“So, Alexander had to come back from his trip, and I took him into London again.
“The next few days were agony and I’m so glass half empty, I was bracing myself for the ‘sorry’ phone call.
“However, I later had a call from Alexander’s agent ringing from her own phone to say he had got the part.”
Alexander’s parents Claire-Louise and Joe Molony, say they are “so proud” at what their superstar son has achieved so far.
Claire added: “Even though it has been more than three years since Alexander was offered the role, we lived in Canada for eight months and flew to LA for a Disney fan convention, where we saw trailers, posters and even a doll of Alexander.
“It still hasn’t sunk in.
“Whenever I took him for recordings, he would blow me away with how professional he was.
“I think the holiday course at Blackheath Conservatoire was the turning point in Alexander and us thinking that acting was something that he might take more seriously.
“We are also big Disney fans as a family and love going to the parks and watching the films, so it’s just so surreal that Alexander is now a part of all of that.”
The new film will hit screens exclusively on Disney+ from Friday April 28.
