Police have said that there have been no arrests one week after a man was shot dead in Erith.

Kai McGinley, 24, from Southwark was reportedly shot by a balaclava-clad gang following a car chase in Erith on February 9.

Police and paramedics were called to Pembroke Road at 8.50pm following reports of shots being fired.

Officers found Kai suffering from a gunshot wound a short distance away in Hillside, and despite attempts by the emergency services to save his life, he died shortly afterwards at the scene.

Witnesses explained to the Evening Standard that two vehicles were involved in the incident, and that several attackers in balaclavas fired shots at the victim following a road chase.

One local told the Evening Standard: “I heard two loud bangs, I looked out and there was a group in balaclavas.

“They took off and the poor bloke was left there dying.”

Another told the News Shopper:

He told the News Shopper: “I heard around three to four loud bangs but didn’t think anything of it.

“Then we heard a helicopter above us, and when outside to see police arriving.

“I didn’t want to leave my house or get involved with it.

"Ambulance services arrived and took the man to hospital.”

Police are appealing for further information about “a silver Land Rover Freelander GL52 HDO which was abandoned by the suspects following the murder”.

Kai’s family have been notified and they are being supported by specialist officers.

The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that there have been no arrests made yet in connection to this incident.

A murder investigation has been launched led by Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, who said: “At this early stage I am very keen to hear from anyone who has any information about the events that took place in Pembroke Road, and in particular anyone that has any knowledge of a silver Land Rover Freelander GL52 HDO which was abandoned by the suspects following the murder.

“I believe that another vehicle or vehicles, that we haven’t yet identified, were then used to drive the suspects away from the scene.

“At least one of these vehicles is likely to be showing signs of front end collision damage.

“If you have noticed a recently damaged vehicle, owned by a friend or family member, seen one parked up or abandoned, or indeed been asked to repair one, please get in touch.

“I have a team of officers and staff working hard to establish what happened to Kai and why – If you saw what happened or have information that can help I need you to get in touch and share what you know.”

DCI Wood, added: “A young man’s life has been ended and a family is now struggling to come to terms with their sudden and terrible loss. Our thoughts are with them today.”
