A food bank in Slade Green is appealing for urgent help as it struggles with the demand to feed 200 people each day.
A post on its Facebook page yesterday (February 8) said it had “literally nothing left” and “does not know much longer” it can cope.
The food bank has appealed for donations to help support the people who need the assistance – saying it would be grateful “even if it is just a tin or two”.
Pictures of almost empty trays of vegetables and understocked cupboard foods were shared to the Facebook page.
A few kind commentors have scheduled food shops to be delivered to the bank in the near future.
The food bank is located at St Augustine’s Church Hall, Slade Green Road, Erith, DA8 2LW and is open from 9am to 6pm on weekdays.
People can donate by bringing items to the church or arranging to have food deliveries there.
The cost-of-living crisis is driving food banks to “breaking point” with almost 1.3 million emergency parcels given to people in hunger over just six months, a leading charity said in November 2022.
The Trussell Trust issued a stark warning after new research showed record-breaking levels of need, with one in five individuals referred to its network now coming from working households.
According to figures from the charity, which provides urgent support to those in poverty, more emergency food parcels were given out during the April to September 2022 period than ever before.
Nearly 1.3 million food parcels were handed out by food banks in the Trussell Trust’s UK network over the same period – almost half-a-million of which went to children.
A post on Slade Green’s Facebook page reads: “We really need your help we literally have nothing left to deal with the 200 people plus a day that we feed we don't know how much longer we can cope as you can see from the empty trays that's six days of food gone and that's how much we go through.
“We need tins of hot dogs, beans and sausages, pasta sauce, chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognese, meatballs, ravioli, soup, tinned veg, mashed potato, kidney beans, chick peas, custard, rice pudding, jelly, jam, Marmalade, chocolate spread, Peanut butter, baby food, wet wipes, toilet rolls, nappies size 3 and over and biscuits, crisps, squash for drinks. We also need fruit and veg, frozen and fresh items.
“If you can help with anything even if it's just a tin or two then please help us we would be extremely grateful.
“We are at St Augustine’s Church Hall Slade Green Road Erith Kent DA8 2LW, Mon - Fri 9am-6pm.”
