Shoppers do not want to return to the Tesco in Woolwich after being “overpowered” by the “horrible” smell of wee - as the car park has become a spot for homeless people to find shelter.

Puddles of urine have been found next to the disabled and family parking, causing people concerns for their children’s welfare as well as those with disabilities.

A regular shopper at the Tesco store in Love Lane, Tracey Hewson, found her visit to the store “intimidating”, and the smell made her worry for her mum who is “on oxygen”.

She told the News Shopper: “We parked at the disabled area next to the entrance and opened to doors to an overpowering stench of old urine.

“The smell was so overbearing I could still smell it after we’d left.

“My mother has a cold and is on oxygen and she found it overpowering to breathe it in too.

“It was also very intimidating to be in that environment with my mother, who uses a walking frame, and my seven-year-old daughter was worried too.

“My heart really does go out to the homeless and they shouldn’t have to live like that.”

Tracey added that the toilets inside of the Tesco store were overflowing to the point where herself and her family decided not to use them.

She says she won’t return to this store because of her experience.

TikTok user @Bexleyresident49 shared a video of the car park, under the impression that it had been converted into a homeless shelter.

The TikTok was taken from someone’s car as they drive through the Tesco car park.

They have shared footage of metal fencing inside the car park where people are sat on the floor with blankets around them.

The creator has included text in the video that says “Tesco car park in Woolwich, Greenwich borough, is now a shelter for homeless people”.

Another shopper who uses the Tesco store in Woolwich is Sarah Jones, and although she empathises with the situation of the homeless, she says weeing on the floor is the “same as leaving drug paraphernalia around”.

She said: “I fully empathise with the homeless needing somewhere sheltered to sleep, however, it’s the location and the fact that they are urinating around the parking area for disabled and families with children.

“Having to dodge the pools of urine with young children whilst retching and trying not to be sick is unpleasant and not fair.

“In my opinion, it’s just the same as leaving drug paraphernalia around. There’s no excuse, homeless or not.”

Mary O’Sullivan echoed Tracey and Sarah’s thoughts - and said that the puddles of urine has put her off of using the supermarket entirely.

She added: “I took my mum last week as she’s got heart failure so I need to take her shopping down there as she lives in Woolwich.

“I live in Belvedere so we got a cab there and got out of the car.

“I could smell urine, it was so bad that I was coughing, I have asthma too.

“It was so strong, there was urine on the floor it was so horrible.

“It’s put me off of going there with my mum.”

We have contacted Tesco but they have not provided a comment.
