Around 100 people have been evacuated from a housing estate after a gas leak in Camberwell.

A gas main on the exterior side of a residential block in Bowyer Street ruptured at 9pm on January 6.

Officers and London Fire Brigade were called to the scene and evacuated residents from Wyndham Estate as a precaution.

Fire crews carried out a search of the estate by checking if levels of chemical substances were present.

The incident was over for the brigade just before 11.30pm.

Fire rescue units from Peckham, Brixton, Lewisham, and Bethnal Green fire stations were called to the scene.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters were called to a gas leak on Bowyer Street in Camberwell.

“A gas main on the exterior side of a residential block ruptured. Around 100 people were evacuated as a precaution and a safety cordon was in place. There were no reports of any injuries.

“Crews carried out a sweep of the building to check increased levels of chemical substances were present.

“The Brigade was called at 2058 and the incident was over for firefighters by 2326.

“Two fire engines and two fire rescue units from Peckham, Brixton, Lewisham and Bethnal Green fire stations are at the scene.”

Southwark Police tweeted on January 6: “Emergency services remain at the scene of a large gas leak at the Wyndham Estate on Bowyer Street in #Camberwell A number of residents have been evacuated as a precaution. There are no reported injuries We would advise people to avoid the area.”
