A police investigation which prevented trains from stopping at Catford was related to an attempted rape during the early hours (January 9).

British Transport Police received a report of an attempted rape at 1am this morning.

Southeastern and Thameslink services were suspended from around 5am as police had closed off the station to finish their investigation.

The station reopened at around 6.30am.

Enquiries are ongoing and BTP are asking anyone with any further information about the incident to quoting reference 20 of 09/01/23.

Commuters were made to redirect their journeys via Catford Bridge station or via bus routes in Lewisham.

At around 5am, Thameslink tweeted: “We have just been told that trains cannot call at Catford due to a police investigation. Trains will run non-stop through this station.

“Southeastern will accept Thameslink tickets at Catford Bridge station, which is next door. TfL Buses are also accepting rail tickets.”

At around 6.30am the station reopened, with Thameslink tweeting: “Catford station has now reopened and trains can call as normal.”

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers received a report of an attempted rape at Catford Station at 1am this morning (9 January).

“The station was closed while specialist officers attended to investigate the scene. It has since reopened, and enquiries remain ongoing.

“Anyone who may have information relating to this incident is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 20 of 09/01/23.

“Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A spokesperson for Thameslink said: "We apologise to passengers that trains were unable to call at Catford station between around 5.25 and 6.25 this morning.

"This was at the request of British Transport Police, who were dealing with an incident."
