The changes to the Southeastern Railway timetable come into effect today (December 11) with some of the adjustments described as “less convenient”.
Southeastern Railway will be reducing the number of trains going to Waterloo and Charing Cross on the Bexleyheath and Woolwich lines during off-peak times.
Some south London workers have even gone as far as saying they will “quit their jobs” and not go into Central London anymore after the controversial timetable change, with MPs saying the reasoning for the changes is “complete nonsense”.
According to Southeastern, the changes were made to reduce “congestion at busy junctions”, such as Lewisham, and ensure “better punctuality and fewer cancellations overall”.
Under the new timetable, Southeastern is encouraging passengers to change trains if they would like to continue on to some stations, whereas it would previously have been a direct route.
Shortly after the timetable change on December 11, strike action is due to take place by the RMT union on 13, 14, 16 and 17 December.
We have gathered the key information that you need to know about traveling to and from south east London on the new Southeastern timetable, which comes into play from December 11.
Woolwich Line changes: Gravesend to London Cannon Street via Dartford, Woolwich and Greenwich
• All trains on this route will now go to London Cannon Street, with Southeastern saying that it has “reduced congestion at busy junctions to give better punctuality and fewer cancellations overall”
• This means that customers looking to travel for London Charing Cross will now need to change at London Bridge instead of travelling directly
• Southeastern is aware that this “will be less convenient” and has “ensured that there are frequent trains from London Bridge to London Charing Cross”
• Trains to and from Dartford will now continue on to Gravesend
Bexleyheath Line changes: Dartford via Bexleyheath to London Cannon Street / London Charing Cross / London Victoria
• Similarly to the Woolwich line changes, off-peak and weekend trains on the Bexleyheath line will now go to London Cannon Street
• Between 7am and 9.59am there will be 21 Southeastern trains to London and between 4pm and 6.59pm there will be 19 Southeastern onpeak services to/from London. These trains will finish at London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross or London Victoria
• Customers at Blackheath, Kidbrooke, Eltham, Falconwood, Welling, Bexleyheath and Barnehurst will not have an off-peak service to London Charing Cross and will need to change at London Bridge.
Sidcup Line changes: Gravesend via Sidcup to London Cannon Street / London Charing Cross / London Blackfriars
• Off-peak and weekend trains on the Sidcup line will now go to London Charing Cross
• This means that off-peak and weekend customers looking to travel to London Cannon Street will now need to change at London Bridge instead of travelling directly
Bromley South Line changes: Orpington via Herne Hill to London Victoria / London Blackfriars
• All London Victoria trains now run to Orpington, increasing the frequency at Bickley, Petts Wood and Orpington from two trains per hour to four in the peak.
• Peak-time Beckenham Junction to London Blackfriars services are reinstated
