The Dartford Crossing is set to close overnight this weekend due to “essential” maintenance work.

It will be closed from 10pm on Saturday (December 10) until 10am on Sunday (December 11).

Southbound traffic will be diverted through the east tunnel while the bridge is closed.

Motorists using the northbound carriageway will be able to use the west tunnel as normal. An alternative diversion will also be in place through the M25 clockwise.

This is for vehicles between 4.8m and 5 metres high approaching from the Kent side of the crossing.

The works will be carried out to replace a bearing at the base of one of the bridge’s four 84-meter-high pylons.

These bearings play a “crucial” role in transferring load from the bridge deck.

It also allows it to expand and contract in different temperatures, according to National Highways.

Drivers are being advised by National Highways to plan ahead and leave extra time during their journeys.
