Star of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, River Medway, says it feels “nice to be home” as she prepares for her theatre debut in Death Drop: Back in the habit showing in Bromley and Dartford.
Death Drop: Back in the habit follows the story of a gaggle of fierce Nuns who are confined to their convent and work their way through a murder mystery sensation.
The upcoming show features the amazing cast of Drag King Louis Cyfer and RuPaul stars – Willam, Cheryl Hole, Victoria Scone, and Kent’s very own River Medway.
Touring across the UK from this autumn, the new production – written by Rob Evans and directed once again by Jesse Jones - kicks off on Thursday, October 27 at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley.
The show will then head to Dartford’s own Orchard Theatre, showing from November 1 until November 5.
River, who was born and raised in Medway, Kent, says she is “thrilled” to be kicking off the tour near her home town.
River told the News Shopper: “Anytime I get to do drag in or near Kent is such an amazing experience for me.
“There’s not always a lot of drag shows in Kent, although there is a huge audience for it, so it feels so special being able to bring my drag closer to home.
“Anytime I get to perform near Medway is great because I want people from my home ends to see what we can do, as Drag Queens.
“Also, it’s a bonus knowing that it’ll only take me 30-minutes to get home and my dad will be able to cook me a dinner.”
River, whose drag name by the River Medway that flows through her hometown, says she grew up playing female roles in theatre shows at school which ultimately influenced her to finding drag.
She says she is “really excited” about taking a break from the high-energy musical performances at the Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK tour and putting her energy towards the hilarious, spoken dialogue on the Death Drop: Back to Habit tour.
She explained: “It feels really great to be back performing at the theatre.
“I am trying to get back into the habit of long rehearsal days and working on an actual play as opposed to drag musical performances.
“I am currently rehearsing for Death Drop on my days off, but I am super excited for the audience to see our new show.
“The Ru Paul tour has been absolutely fantastic - I have felt like a rockstar.
“But it’s a new city every day and it’s very tiring, so I am looking forward to the Death Drop tour because we get to spend more time in each city.”
After a remarkable run on series 3 of BBC Three's RuPaul's Drag Race UK, the Medway-born star was eliminated in the sixth week of the show.
The 24-year-old performer says she feels “absolutely fabulous” to be working with some of the iconic Queens from Drag Race and is looking forward to performing in a “real piece of theatre” which River claims doesn’t happen very often in the drag world.
River added: “I am so out of practise from working with scripts, apart from doing the panto.
“My full time job is travelling across the world doing drag shows.
“I remember getting back into rehearsals last week and I completely forgot what it feels like.
“It is such hard work and so much thought behind Death Drop because we’re quite literally putting together an entire production.
“But I feel so much more at home.
“I feel like myself a bit more doing theatre, as I have spent my whole life training to do this.
“As much as I love doing my drag shows, it's nice to feel like I'm part of a company.”
