An investigation has been launched after the bodies of four dogs were recovered from a lake in Thamesmead and an allegation of animal cruelty was made.

Officers were called to Southmere Lake in Bazalgette Way just before 8.50pm on September 24.

A person had reportedly seen three sacks floating in the lake that appeared to have something inside them.

Marine Policing Unit officers attended the scene and recovered the dogs’ bodies from the lake. 

Police say the dogs appeared to be similar to the American Bulldog type. 

The RSPCA has been informed and the Metropolitan Police is working in consultation with them.

Post-mortem examinations will take place in due course.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101 and quote reference CAD 6661/24SEP.

“Marine Policing Unit officers attended and the bodies of four dogs were recovered from the lake.

“The RSPCA have been informed and the MPS is working in consultation with them.

“Post mortems will take place in due course.
