No immediate TfL plans for speed cameras on Hurst Road Bexley

It comes after a car crashed into a garden wall of two houses and a telegraph pole on July 2, 2022.

The Mercedes moves the parked car sideways and huge amounts of debris can then be seen in the air.

Speaking to the News Shopper following the crash, residents of Hurst Road, Karen Hearn and neighbour Duncan expressed concerns about the safety of their families.

The pair called for “immediate” action from Bexley Council to install speed cameras on the road to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

A spokesperson for Bexley Council said the decision on whether a speed camera is needed is decided by TfL and the police.

Karen said that speed cameras need to be installed to ensure the safety of the people living on Hurst Road.

She explained: “Something needs to be done on the road whether this is bringing in traffic restrictions or installing speed cameras.

“We need to ensure the safety of people on this road, especially with a primary school on the road too.” 

Duncan said he was not surprised that the crash happened as cars are “always speeding” on Hurst Road.

The 61-year-old explained: “We were shocked and rushed outside when we heard a bang from the street. 

“I’m not surprised though. 

“This is not the first time something like this has happened. 

“Cars are always speeding down this road. 

“There’s also a school on the same road, so it’s also dangerous for the kids.”

A spokesperson for Bexley Council said no decision has been made concerning speed cameras at this stage for Hurst Road.

A spokesperson for TfL said it has “no immediate plans” to install speed cameras on Hurst Road but is committed to working with the borough to ensure that roads are safe for everyone who lives and works in Bexley.

The matter is still under police investigation.

A spokesperson for Bexley Council said: “There has been no decision made concerning speed cameras at this stage.

“The Police and TfL decide that there is a case for speed cameras, and we are clear that the introduction will mean local people are safer, we would then discuss with them where any camera could be introduced.”

The full statement issued by TfL said: “We’re determined to reduce road danger caused by speeding as part of our Vision Zero commitment to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s roads.

“We have committed to expanding London’s safety camera network as part of our efforts to reduce speeding and speed-related collisions in the capital and are currently carrying out the work needed to prepare for this expansion.

“Although we have no immediate plans to install speed cameras on Hurst Road, we are committed to working with the borough to ensure that roads are safe for everyone who lives and works in Bexley.”

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “At 8.39pm on Saturday, 2 July police were called to Hurst Road, Bexley following reports of a road traffic collision.

“Two men were taken to hospital with injuries that were later assessed as non-life threatening.

“Damage was caused to a telegraph pole and the garden walls of two houses.

“Hurst Road was closed while the emergency services responded to the incident.”

The latest statement issued by the Metropolitan Police said: “The matter remains under investigation.”
